Hunkey Hollow - A Fictional Short Story set in the real lost community of Himlerville, KY

The wind blows warm and soft across the Appalachian Mountains as I look down at my own grave.  Lonely and forgotten.  Abandoned really, except for the presence of others like myself, holding on to the past, afraid of the future, and pessimistic about the present.  The graves within this graveyard are long forgotten.  The weeds [...]

Christmas in Appalachia

Christmas is a wonderful thing.  You have Christmas plays, Christmas lights, Christmas trees and all manner of decoration.  Christmas has always been a big to-do in the Howell household.  My mom can be very focused and competitive, especially when there is a certain new and great toy that her child wants.Â
I remember sitting in the [...]

Deer Hunting Season

Men in Appalachia take Deer Hunting Season very seriously.  From the time they are small boys, they are groomed into being hunters.  There is no prouder moment in a mountaineers life than his first Buck, mounted on the wall with his name and the date engraved below it.  They are heirlooms that are passed down from [...]

Don’t Drown Them Please

I was very small when both of my parent’s joined church.  I’m going to say I was 3 or 4.  At any rate, the church going was fine, but the baptism part was more than I could take.Â

Easter Chicks and Bunnies

I grew up on a farm just outside of Fort Gay, WV in a hallow named Mill Creek.  Easter was a special time.  A time of new dresses, coloring eggs with my mom and brother and a Sunday morning trip to church, Old Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church to be exact.Â
The Easter Bunny would always come [...]

Save my Pancake

When I was really little, maybe 3 or 4, I got my first pet, a puppy named Pancake.  I’m not sure why I named him Pancake, but I did.  I was a sensitive child and I remember that one morning my mom asked me if I wanted a pancake for breakfast.  I remember crying [...]

Chicken Pox

In the 1980’s everyone got chicken pox.  Some children’s parents would even send them to play with kids who had it just to get it over with.  My mom was not one of those people.  She did her best to keep me and my brother, who was three years younger, from getting in.  She was [...]

Carry me, my bottom hurts!

When I was small in the late 1970’s and 1980’s, my mom used to take me to a pediatrician in Ashland, KY for all of my doctor’s visits.  I think that most people just went to a regular family doctor, but we would travel about 45 minutes to the pediatrician’s office.  It seems like every [...]
